The large church built in 1726-43 dominates the Dresden skyline - its large dome over the massive hall creating one of the great German baroque landmarks. In 1945 after the bombing raid, it seemed to have survived structurally although it was burned out. Two days later the dome collapsed. The GDR regieme never proceeded on its reconstruction. After reunification, work started. It was completed in 2004.
